How to relay information to your boss
There are 3 levels of relaying information to your boss:
Regurgitating 🔴 — DON’T DO
Synthesizing 🟡 — DO LESS
Actionable Point-of-View 🟢 — DO MORE
Example:
Manager: "Sorry I couldn't join that meeting just now, but what was the feedback from our stakeholders?"
Your Response:
Regurgitating 🔴 — DON’T DO
“So, Adam said that our new process was too confusing.
But Bernice said that her team actually didn't mind that it was slightly more complex. She appreciated that we gave them more control.
Then Chris agreed with Bernice, but said that…”
Synthesizing 🟡 — DO LESS
"The feedback session on the new process was smooth. Most of our stakeholders were OK.
We can proceed with the official roll-out next week.
There were two pieces of feedback that stood out. One was from Adam, who believed that our new process actually creates more confusion.
The other was from Bernice, who appreciated the greater control.”

There were two pieces of feedback that stood out.
The first was from Bernice, who appreciated the greater control.
The second and most critical one was from Adam, who believed that our new process actually creates more confusion.
However, I notice that Adam has not been joining our project meetings consistently. He might have been lost on the background. Hence, not fully grasping the long-term picture.
I will schedule a 1-on-1 session this week to bring him up to speed.

A few lines from the essay:
Start thinking like a product owner.
Start thinking about what should be built, not just how to build it.
Most executives are chosen for their ability to grow the business.
This means seeing what needs to be done, what products will sell, what problems are coming far in advance, and how to shape the organization to deliver the above.
Executives must be seen as strategic leaders. Very few make it only through execution.

Excerpt from the interview:
Stress primarily comes from not taking action over something that you can have some control over.
As soon as I identify it, and make the first phone call, or send off the first e-mail message, or whatever it is to start to address that situation -- even if it's not solved -- the mere fact that we're addressing it dramatically reduces any stress that might come from it.
